The Myth of Account Portability on Mastodon
I've heard countless times that if you don't like how your Mastodon server is run, you can just move to a new one. Well, I tested it, and that is simply not true!
While Twitter locks you in with a proprietary protocol, Mastodon locks you in with a messy UX, incomplete functionality, and the myth of "you can just move".
Here's a thread looking at why I moved, what I did, and how it went.

With Awakari getting the spotlight again recently, I think it's time to remind everyone.
Unless you set your posts to "followers only", there's no safety from scrapers, AI, manual collection, etc.
Even more so, your "Public" posts can EASILY be grabbed if you're on Mastodon through your RSS feed.
There's 20k+ Fediverse instances out there and when you create a Fedi instance, it federates by default unless specifically specified. There is no guaranteed way to verify what each instance is doing with your posts.
Fediverse is not some kind of "bastion of privacy" like some seem to think.
If you want your posts to be private and almost guaranteed unscrapable, set your posts to "Followers Only".

Holy crapoli!
I just realized I crossed the 900 followers mark.
That's insane. That's like 300x more people than I have around me IRL!
Thank you to every one of you who decided to interact with me over the past year. I'm coming on my Fediversary at the end of the month and it's been such a wild ride so far.
There's lots of ups and downs, ins and outs, and little nuances about Fedi, but overall, having my own little corner of the internet where nobody can tell me who I can or can't interact with, has been fantastic!
I love you all. May you all be as federated as you wish!
Mastodon / "the Fediverse" may not have "big" levels of activity like the Big Named Social Media, but...
I've seen enough activity in Mastodon these days that it forced me to *unfollow hashtags* because the updates to the timeline hog the CPU and prevent the /remote timeline from loading properly (I don't wanna even imagine what it was doing to /public).
Which sucks because I love the content, but I love a functioning computer I paid for *more*.
I've been told that Mastodon and the Fediverse will never catch on (as in get to the point people know what it is / use it).
Tell me a reason you enjoy Mastodon / The Fediverse.

An Interesting discovery about #Threads: If I repost something on my Threads account (which is @darnell@threads.net for those wondering) & the other Threads account I reposted has not joined the #Fediverse, then it does not show up on my #Mastodon / #Misskey feed.
#Meta is probably doing this out of privacy concerns, but it is frustrating as numerous news organizations are using Threads but have yet to activate #ActivityPub on their accounts (at least those who have the option available).
Hetzner introduced new CPUs, so now a cloud server with 4 GB of RAM costs €3.92 (without VAT). It's perfect for hobbyists. If you want the same RAM on DigitalOcean, it costs $24. Corporate greed is slashing prices 😃
