#health #COP30

If our planet were a patient, it would be admitted to intensive care. Its vital signs are alarming. It is running a high fever, with average global temperatures increasing year after year. Its lung capacity is compromised, with the destruction of forests that absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. & many of the earth's water sources - its lifeblood - are contaminated. Most concerning of all, its condition is deteriorating

Good news in perilous times.

"World's Largest Cargo Sailboat Completes Historic First Atlantic Crossing"

Its not just the largest in the world, its the largest wind powered ship in history, by a lot. A LOT.

So it begins.

This is one, there will be many.

There is one measure of progress preventing climate collapse, how much we have REPLACED carbon fueled engines. ONE MEASURE. NO OTHER.

No utopia is perfect. There will always be some kind of pain, so in my #solarpunk short film, a couple fight over chicken, but this is not just material for a dark comedy. It is a talk about food as the #climate crisis disrupts farming, with inspiration from food preservation techniques in pre-colonial cultures Help me make this film with a boost, or #donate if you can.

Just five international oil and gas giants – ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP and TotalEnergies – are responsible for over $5 trillion in projected climate damages based on their emissions since the Paris Agreement was adopted (between 2016 & 2025).

That’s the shocking finding from experts from Stanford and Delaware universities, who used the social cost of carbon methodology, alongside emissions data from the Carbon Majors Database

China has one company that builds and connects solar power, equal in output, to Italy's total use, every single year.

This is just a "do it" - its not a wait for a special energy solution, or fusion, or nukes, or waiting for Godot.

Its just do it. Do it so German forests dont die, so Russian oil stops flowing, so transition jobs are created. So floods stop washing out cities

Build it.
Its a "do"

#HurricaneMelissa left #meteorologists stunned and worried
Melissa's extreme winds, periods of rapidly intensifying winds, and the way it skipped a typical replacement of its inner core amazed scientists who study tropical cyclones.
In the minds of many – but not all – #hurricane and #climate experts, Melissa’s terrifying trip through the #Caribbean also piled on evidence of the increasing influence of a warming ocean on an evolving hurricane landscape.

Good news, hard times.

New South Korea law will turn large parking lots into solar power farms.

Mandatory Installation of Solar Panels in Public Parking Lots.

And It Will Apply Retroactively to Existing Facilities

Parking lots in South Korea with more than 80 spaces will be required to install solar canopies. But, unlike similar laws elsewhere, the new law doesn’t just apply to new construction – existing lots will have to comply.

Yay.

Staff cuts at NOAA have resulted in loss of "27,000 years of experience."

NOAA retirees are working as volunteers and unpaid interns to help with the current workload.

The White House wants to entirely eliminate NOAA Research, the branch of the agency that oversees the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory.

This is deliberate sabotage by the anti-science White House.

HUGE win today for the climate in Norway!

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that the Norwegian government must consider the global climate impact before approving new oil and gas projects

"This judgment will have ripple effects far beyond Norway” says Sigrid Hoddevik Losnegård of Young Friends of the Earth Norway, who brought the case with Greenpeace Norway and six youth activists

This is more than concerning; it is, or it should, downright alarming.

Australia's tropical rainforests have switched from Carbon sink to Carbon source — they now release more CO2 than they absorb. We're the first, likely because our rainforests exist in drier climes than most in the world.

If other forests follow suit, all climate models will need rethinking and the temperature predictions will be woefully inadequate.

> "We thought the forest would be able to store more carbon because [CO2] is increasing. But looking at these long term empirical datasets, we find that is not the case – it allows us to confront the theory with reality and better understand how these systems work.”

EDIT: This data also puts the lie to the climate change deniers' claim that "More CO2 is good for the trees."

It's atrocious that old growth forest in BC is being turned into pellets by foreign-owned mills in BC and then shipped to UK to Drax to produce this below:

Drax receives £2m in subsidies every day for its biomass power generation.
Drax biomass power station is the UK’s top CO2 emitter

As green policies in the European Union come under scrutiny, three in four EU respondents say it is important that the bloc uphold its environmental laws.

Around three-quarters of adults in 10 EU countries believe that large companies with 250 or more employees should be held accountable for human rights and environmental harms in their supply chains, a new Ipsos poll shows

Yesterday at the International Maritime Organisation in London, a meeting which was intended to conclude with the adoption of a global levy on environmentally damaging shipping emissions, ended up (after significant US pressure) pausing the adoption of the measure (and this its staged implementation) for another year.

Once again climate sceptics in the Court of the Tangerine Tyrant are blocking (albeit belated) attempts to tackle climate change.

This spike in demand is driving an unexpected resurgence in coal generation, which has increased nearly 20 percent year-to-date. The research note, seen by The Register, states:
"We raise our estimate for coal generation by ~11 percent (driven by higher capacity factors), and staying elevated through 2027 on favorable fuel pricing vs gas (particularly for existing fleet).".
