Hintergrund: Keine Grafik löst solche Hasswellen aus wie diese. Und mit Grund:

1. Die Grafik widerlegt den Mythos einer „Bewahrung der Schöpfung”, also die Behauptung eines konstanten Klimas, bis der böse Mensch auftauchte.
2. Die millionenalten Werte beruhen auf physikalischen Rekonstruktionen (z. B. mit Isotopen). Allerdings sind die Werte nicht fein nach Jahrhunderten oder gar Jahren aufgelöst, sondern eher nach Jahrmillionen.

In den Hassposts wird regelmäßig folgendes bekrittelt:
1. Im Kambrium (-500 Mio. Jahre) lebten keine Menschen. Das ist gerade der Clou! Deshalb gab es damals auch keinen menschengemachten Klimawandel.
2. Im Kambrium hätten Menschen nicht überleben können. Stimmt, aber wer hat anderes behauptet?

Die Grafik selbst ist unstreitig; ähnliche sind sogar in Schulbüchern zu finden. Die enorme Varianz von Temperatur und CO2 vor der Existenz von Menschen legt nahe, dass die Klimareligion verfehlt ist und uns eine kleine Clique von Nihilisten und Profiteuren den Wohlstand raubt.

Ich würde jene Milliarden, die die Ampel sinnlos für die Steuerung der Erdtemperatur verplempert, für Infrastruktur, Bildung, Gesundheit, Umwelt- und Hochwasserschutz einsetzen!

Brazil is in the grip of its worst drought on record, an event that has parched at least 59% of Latin America’s largest country and dried out more than 1,400 cities.

Much of the crisis, scientists say, can be explained by climate change, which is driving temperatures higher and making rainfall more unpredictable. But it’s been exacerbated by the deforestation of the Amazon, which has the potential to disrupt rainfall patterns across much of South America.

“We have to focus on why this is happening,” said Philip Fearnside, a biologist at the National Institute of Amazon Research. “This is global warming and deforestation.”

Reliant on trees, the hydraulic system is now being frayed by deforestation. The destruction has been most acute in the southeastern Amazon, precisely where the moisture from the Atlantic is first deposited. The loss of vegetation is reducing the volume of water that’s reaching the continent.

In a country where agricultural gains often come at the loss of the natural environment, many think “forest is a waste of land,” said Luciana Gatti, a climate researcher at Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research.

2024 might be a year of historic drought in Brazil, she said. But don’t expect the record to stand for long.

“You can put this in capital letters,” said Gatti. “It WILL get worse and worse. We are heading toward an apocalyptic situation, and unfortunately we only wake up at the last minute.”

What is important in life?

Is it to have the best car and the newest smartphone, or is it to be happy?

Is it to have a high-paid job, or is it to spend time with loved ones and enjoy the beauties of nature?

For critics, degrowth is not very appealing. According to them, it means impoverishment, restraint, scarcity, austerity, or recession. It is seen as a project to reduce the overall prosperity of individuals and societies.

In contrast, I argue that degrowth aims to achieve abundance, prosperity, and richness.

Degrowth is about building societies in which everyone is rich – without much material.

It is impossible to promise everyone to achieve high levels of consumption. Indeed, it would lead to environmental and societal catastrophes. It would also be extremely unfair, as those most suffering from environmental degradation are already the most marginalised.

Instead, degrowth aims to achieve an abundance that does not entail high levels of consumption: a ‘frugal abundance’.

All of humanity could share a prosperous equitable future, but the space for development is rapidly shrinking under pressure from a wealthy minority of ultra-consumers, a groundbreaking study has shown.

The new paper is a 62-page “thought experiment” by an international team of scientists that seeks to map out how the world’s 7.9 billion people could remain within safe planetary boundaries while accessing necessary levels of food, water, energy, shelter and transport. It then projects how this may change by 2050, when the population is likely to be 9.7 billion people.

Growing environmental degradation and climate instability have pushed the Earth beyond a series of safe planetary boundaries, say the authors, but it still remains possible to carve out a “safe and just space” that would enable everyone to thrive.

That utopian outcome would depend on a radical transformation of global politics, economics, and society to ensure a fairer distribution of resources, a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels, and the widespread adoption of low-carbon, sustainable technologies and lifestyles, it said.

The scale of the required change will alarm many governments, acknowledged one of the lead authors. “It won’t be immediately welcomed. To some extent, it is frightening, but it shows that there is still a space for people and other species,” said Joyeeta Gupta, a professor of environment and development at the University of Amsterdam.

Under our current highly unequal, fossil-fuel intensive social and environmental conditions, it is now impossible for all humans to live healthy lives within a “safe and just corridor.” That finding is underscored by previous studies that show that seven of the eight planetary boundaries have already been breached.

The authors said the current global situation of worsening inequality and rising nationalist politics may not seem conducive to achieving the just and safe plan laid out, but governments can change and so can public opinion – particularly at a time of intensifying climate stress.

Former NASA astronaut Ron Garan has shared powerful insights from his view of Earth from space — one that offered a fresh perspective on the planet’s challenges.

Garan’s observations from orbit shifted the usual way we think about Earth. The former astronaut pointed out that problems such as deforestation, global warming, and climate change, which are seen as profoundly dangerous issues, are just “symptoms” of an underlying root problem. Garan added that there is something bigger that humans don't see that needs worrying.

That “paper-thin” atmosphere is all that stands between humanity and disaster. Garan was troubled by how easily this fact is overshadowed by economic priorities. He said, “I saw an iridescent biosphere teeming with life. I didn't see the economy. But since our human-made systems treat everything, including the very life-support systems of our planet, as the wholly owned subsidiary of the global economy, it's obvious from the vantage point of space that we're living a lie.”

New research shows that feedbacks in the climate system are boosting methane emissions from natural sources, especially tropical wetlands.

Scientists say that an abrupt surge in methane emissions in the early 2000s is probably due mainly to the response of wetlands to warming, with additional contributions coming from fossil fuel use, “implying that anthropogenic emissions must decrease more than expected to reach a given warming goal.”

Increasing rainfall, a well-documented impact of global warming, is making wetlands larger and wetter, and a warmer world fosters more plant growth, which means more decomposing material that emits methane.

About 60% of methane emissions are from fossil fuel use, farming, landfills, and waste, with the rest coming from rotting vegetation in wetlands in the tropics and Northern Hemisphere.

A new trouble spot is in the Arctic, where scientists recently found unexpectedly large methane emissions in winter. And globally, the increase in water vapor caused by global warming is slowing the rate at which methane breaks down in the atmosphere.

🚨 THE WORLD'S LARGEST DEFORESTATION PROJECT HAS BEGUN. Amid the paradise forests of #Papua, #Indonesia, a business consortium has started destroying what will eventually be 20,000 square kilometers slated for the "Meruake Intergrated Food and Energy Development Area." That’s 112 times the size of Washington, DC.

The company, PT Global Papua Abadi and partners like Sulaidy (linked to First Resources Ltd.) are destroying habitat for endangered tree kangaroos and birds of paradise. The land was allotted to the companies without seeming concern for the Indigenous communities who live on it.

The photo below is of the latest shipment of 264 excavators bought from China. It's part of a mind-boggling order of 2000 land-clearing machines. This is likely the largest single deforestation project in the world…and it makes no sense.

Although the stated rationale is that the project will provide climate resilience and food security, the reality is the opposite: this level of deforestation will pump about a billion tons of carbon pollution into the atmosphere and bulldoze local food gardens to make room for mono-culture sugar and rice plantations. Much of the sugar won't go to food, but rather ethanol to be burned in gas tanks. Simply put, it is a disaster.

It follows previous failed efforts to establish state-backed plantation agriculture: the "Mega-Rice Project" on Borneo's peatland rainforest resulted in hundreds of thousands of acres of degraded land…but no permanent rice (rice doesn't grow well on peat). This project seems likely to end in similar failure.

The tragedy is that this project would also single-handedly undermine Indonesia's greatest climate success: reducing the rate of commodity deforestation by an amazing 90%.

I hope that President Jokowi, incoming President Prabowo, and Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurubaya will examine the project to see if the companies involved are actually delivering on its purposes – or are instead breaking the government's legal commitments.

There is reason for hope: the government recently took the brave step of stopping another company's threat to forests: Mayawana Persada’s destruction of more than 90,000 acres in Borneo. They acted acted because the destruction undermined the government’s nationally determined climate commitments (NDCs): to restore 2 million hectares of peatland and 12 million of degraded land.

The Merauke project is about 50 times as big as Mayawana Persada’s: It's hard to understand how it passes legal muster or contributes to the country’s admirable goals.

Indonesia’s forest success has been a signal accomplishment of the Jokowi administration – and an example for the world. As the administration comes to a close, the President and his successor have the opportunity to secure one of Indonesia’s greatest examples of international leadership into the future.
