The continuing demolition of the 175 year old Union Corner Building after the devastating fire which destroyed it. In the background is the distictive Ca'D'Oro building, which was severely damaged by a fire in the 1980s, but was successfully resurrected afterwards.

Now that Spring is here, and the weather's getting better, if you feel the urge to get out and explore Glasgow, then you may be interested in my book Glasgow Uncovered: 18 Walks Through its Past, Present And Future (ISBN: 9781909832893).

The Pont du Gard is one of my favourite Roman artefacts anywhere. Built in the first century CE, this elevated aqueduct was constructed without mortar, and is about 275 m long and 50 m high. The total fall across the structure is only 2.5 cm - it truly is an engineering marvel. The protuding stones were used in construction to secure formwork and scaffolding.

This is a building which will be familiar to many from the view to it down Renfield Street, and for years there was an Irn Bru advert on the rooftop hoarding on the left of the photo, which was visible behind the corner dome, and a red neon Bells sign on the dome itself.

If it is this building that's been affected and if it's as bad the the current reports suggest, this is going to have a major impact on the local streetscape, and the views down Renfield Street, as well as causing major disruption to the roads around Central Station.

There's currently a major fire on Union Street in the centre of Glasgow. There are no reports of casualties, but apparently parts of the building involved have collapsed.

As far as I can work out from the news footage, it's the building in the centre of this photo (which I took last year) which has been affected.
