"It was written for its own time," I thought as the sci-fi book described scientists smoking indoors. A scene of regressive gender banter came next. "It's not written for me at all. I may get something out of it, but it wasn't made for posterity."
I've heard unenlightened views described as products of their time, often in the attempt to defend historical figures. In this case I'm reading a book that's come through time to be with me—written mid last century. I see the limits of the 1/2
Again, I finished "Drystone: A Life Rebuilt" by Kristie De Garis @kristiedegaris. In this inspiring memoir, she rebuilds her life like she rebuilds a wall as a dry-stone waller: each stone carefully placed. Heartbreaking yet courageous, her sincerity makes the book both painful and hopeful.
None of us are too broken to begin again. Rebuilding is possible, even late in life. Sometimes the most radical act is simply telling the truth about who we are.
If you can't attend my event tomorrow (1st December) at University of Glasgow, it's available to live stream at the link below

It's going to be an interesting and lively conversation about my book Drystone - A Life Rebuilt, writing, publishing, life. Chaired by the brilliant Simon Kövesi. 1pm start.
I believe you can also ask questions vie the livestream.

Rekommenderas varmt!

I like this book. Describes the various very low paid jobs the author did.
