A vertically oriented photograph of the sun setting over the sea, which is covered by coarse ice. There are several small rocky islands and islet in the sea, some of which have trees on them and some are barren. In the foreground some snow and bedrock from the near shore are visible. The upper part of the photo is a cloudy sky with blues and yellows of the late afternoon sky visible between the clouds. The sun shines through a gap in the clouds, creating a bright yellow line of reflection in the sea ice.

Near Sunset

Splash

Many intelligent creatures play, when hunger is satisfied they look for pastimes.

These beautiful animals were racing each other through the water, their sleek bodies leaping and, instead of the simple "surface and breath" behaviour, they were making splashes.

Surely, they were doing it for fun?

For #MountainMonday I have this excellent view from the summit of Pyramid Peak, photographed during a recent hike in the Santa Rosa Mountains of Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

That was ~8.5 miles/13.7 km out and back with a total elevation gain of 3045 feet/928 meters according to my fitness tracker... calves are still aching today... 😅

Inversion Sunrise, Scottish Highlands (2024).

The recent cold snaps in the UK have made me think back to some excellent mornings a couple years ago in the Highlands where I explored a rewilding glen in inversion conditions. The glowing light and sub zero temperatures in the birch lined valley made for stunning photographic opportunities.

Cloud inversions are pure magic. ☁️

The view from Raven's Rock in Wicklow at the end of 2024 was absolutely surreal. The world below was hidden, leaving just this little island of trees floating in a sea of white.

Elder Shore
