Inversion Sunrise, Scottish Highlands (2024).
The recent cold snaps in the UK have made me think back to some excellent mornings a couple years ago in the Highlands where I explored a rewilding glen in inversion conditions. The glowing light and sub zero temperatures in the birch lined valley made for stunning photographic opportunities.

A photo taken at a motocross event in Cork.
Often, people/cameras will try to freeze the action, but to me, it's more fun and dynamic to use that motion.
So, my shutter speed was relatively long at 1/20s and I tracked to the rider's head - you can see almost everything else is moving. It's a fast part of the track and I was quite close!
You can see how far the camera moved from the background.
Panning like this isn't all that easy, but it's great when it works.

Sunrise over Lake Superior from Minnesota's North Shore this morning. It was -18°F (-27.8°C). I love the sea smoke that the cold temps create and the ice formations in the foreground were wild.

So looking for the ice picture I posted earlier sent me down memory lane for a bit. I wanted to share a small piece of that with you, so here's my eldest in late 2011.
Okey one more. This time my regular 14mm perspective, looking straight up at a corona. I picked this one from the same time of night, to match the other two 10mm shots in this thread.
I am struggling with editing these, because the colours are so intense. It looks un-natural, as though they are doctored. Yet I've backed off the saturation by double my usual amount. It really is an intense display when the big ones zip over head.
What colours are real? The camera is seeing a lot more colour than our eyes do. We did see the red and greens in the night, for sure. At times the sky was like daylight, but green and red. If you tinker with white-balance you can push those reds into purple, and the brighter greens into yellow hues. Reality is anything you want it to be on a night like this.

Was chatting to a friend today about the importance of having art in our lives. To focus our minds on creating art and expressing that aspect of ourselves. Art is like nature, we need to "touch grass" on a regular basis, and we need to "hold the brush" just as often.
Here's one of my favourite moments from last night. It's shot with a 10mm fisheye, so it's more than 180° of view from top to bottom. That burst of corona above the fjord is directly above my head, and then continues behind me to the south. The 10mm sees all of this.
I must take care to keep my head out of the shot in such moments :)

I probably should be back out there taking more photos, but I came home for a bit to get warm and have a hot meal. And part of me wants to head to bed, and part of me wants to sit out in the cold and hope to see a few more of these.
The beauty of the movement, the shapes, the colours and the transience is something I will never be able to fully grasp. But I keep trying.

Re-introduction - Been on here since 2022 and should write an intro again. I'm deaf, I'm a fan of open-source projects, so this will be short and sweet.
Post random ramblings, news, techie stuff, boost mostly cat pics. I just like computers and hang around here.

The sea moves endlessly, reshaping itself with every breath, while the rocks remain. Just before sunset, light softens the water into silk, revealing a balance between calm and motion.

Welp, I captured two shots of the tonight's big solar storm. The most intense part of the storm happened at my location before the sunset. The first shot below was shortly after sunset at Sand Mountain from a bit of a distance. It's an offroader's sand dune recreation area & it's $40 to go in. 🫤 And the second shot was at Harmon Reservoir a couple miles east of Fallon, Nevada. Nice to see some color this far south! 😍
