Vermont became the first state to hold oil companies financially liable for climate damages.

The Climate Superfund Act directs the state to charge major fossil fuel companies potentially billions of dollars to pay for climate impacts to which their emissions have contributed.

Unsurprisingly, the law is expected to face legal challenges from the industry.

Climate and health benefits of wind and solar dwarf all subsidies: By displacing fossil fuels, wind and solar saved the US $250 billion over 4 years.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/05/climate-and-health-benefits-of-wind-and-solar-dwarf-all-subsidies/

"The researchers find that, in the US, wind and solar have health and climate benefits of over $100 for every Megawatt-hour produced, for a total of a quarter-trillion dollars in just the last four years. This dwarfs the cost of the electricity they generate and the total of the subsidies they received."

Delhi heat claims first victim — 40-year-old factory worker from Darbhanga

The doctor said once he arrived at the hospital, he was immediately admitted to the Heat Stroke Unit – a special unit set up for the first time at the hospital on May 8 because of the rising temperature.

11/ snip "Crop production depends on a stable #climate. It is not a matter of “if” but of “when” a significant #catastrophe occurs. A globally significant #famine is going to happen. It could happen in 2 years or it could take 10–15. I can’t know that. But trends are clear. When it happens, the import-dependent US will not be spared. The biggest, most critical failure of imagination is how people assume the US govt will respond to this catastrophe. Capitalism solves shortages by increasing price. Other countries may take a more humane approach to #food rationing, but the US govt is absolutely not going to supply emergency rations to the public. The poor will simply starve.

The US govt is preparing for #ClimateChange by hiring 100,000 additional police officers, an approximately 15% increase to our already obscenely bloated, militarized, domestic occupation force of ~680,000. This is America’s climate change adaptation plan: more #police."

8/ snip "Bill Rees is one of a number of #climate scientists who portray #climatechange as one symptom of a larger planetary problem of ecological #overshoot. In this excellent lecture (https://youtu.be/9oVTHKzC7TM) he briefly touches on: ocean acidification, freshwater contamination, #deforestation, soil #erosion, #desertification, overfishing and species #extinctions."

Key quotes:

“It’s not just mammals. Wild bird populations are also tumbling. Domestic poultry now constitute 70% of the world’s avian biomass. Average populations of thousands of monitored species of wild vertebrates, birds, fish, mammals, amphibians, have declined ~60% since 1970. Populations of #invertebrates, including essential #pollinators, are also in free-fall: Butterflies down 53%; beetles down 49%, bumblebees down 46%… All species monitored by WWF are down 68–70% in just 50 years.”"

Looks like global CO2 emissions finally peaked. Good. But no time to lose: onwards to a rapid descent!

There are disputes on how to talk about climate change so that individuals care more about or "buy" climate protection. Not too alarmist, mainstream, positive enough?

Meanwhile CO2 emissions - the primary driver of #climatechange - are still rising globally and atmospheric CO2 reaches new record values.

When non-violent protest - non-violent protest to save the world, no less - is criminalized, the world should worry.

1. Oceans and rivers could become unrecognizable, turning into garbage dumps.

2. #climatechange can lead to more extreme weather, making every day an adventure (but not the fun kind).

3. Our beautiful marine life could be replaced with plastic fish and soda can crabs.

Let’s not let these smiles fool us. Our planet is a treasure, and it’s up to us to keep it clean and green.

Stay green, stay clean!

Leaving areas without mowing helps conserving habitats for insects, birds, other invertebrates, small mammals, etc. It also makes the meadow more resilient against heat and drought.

How does your city do this? Are they biodiversity aware or part of the problem?
