May I just say that not being able to set your own fucking character limit on your own fucking Mastodon instance without having to fucking fork fucking Mastodon is a fucking pain in the fucking arse.
Thank you for listening and hereās wishing you a lovely day.
Nice demonstration of why mastodon's dominance is problematic
See the conversions here:
https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/4628
and
https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/federating-the-content-of-posts-note-articles-and-character-limits/4087
AFAICT, mastodon's decisions, which are arguably problematic (on which see: https://lemmy.ml/post/14973403) are literally trickling down to other platforms and infecting how they federate with each other as they dance around mastodon's quirks in different ways.
It seems like masto is ruining "the standard" with its gravity.

In the latest episode of #DotSocial I interview @snarfed.org, a passionate bridge builder with a focus on connecting people across the open web and the #fediverse. His latest work, #BridgyFed, connects #ActivityPub and #ATProtocol resulting in excitement, critique and *lots* of discussion.
Ryan and I talk about the parallel communities on #Mastodon and #Bluesky, their shared desire to create an open social web and the pros and cons of their underlying protocols, #ActivityPub and #ATProtocol. Can or should these be bridged? If so, how? As whole new communities continue to join the fediverse, how should the user experience evolve?
Listen to this excellent discussion on our @PeerTube instance or wherever you get your #podcasts.

Ugh. I have so much resentment for Fedi admins who shut down instances without doing their due diligence to make sure their users are taken care of.š¤¬š¤¦āāļø
Worst, if you make an announcement about a shutdown, claiming you'll help, then proceed to delete that announcement and then your account, making getting that help impossible.š

#mastodon
There are actually people that are asking for an un-federated, Fediverse platform....
And they don't see how ridiculous this is!
These types of platforms have been around for decades! They're called forums and they don't have federation at all!
FediTip of the day:
If you're new, you might want to post an #introduction post littered with hashtags that are related to your interests.
A lot of people browse that hashtag to find new users and help them along.
A lot of instances don't allow full text search, therefore hashtags are their only way of seeing your posts.

I find myself using the same hashtags for my interests, over and over. However, there doesn't seem to be an app, so far, that allows me to have a list of frequently used tags so I don't have to retype them for every single post...
How is this not a thing yet? I've been BEGGING for a "Hashtag Drawer" type feature in apps for AGES now...š¤¦āāļø
Reflecting on the firefish/calckey "moment"
which was about a year ago now, I can't help but suspect it was a small event with wider implications on the dominance of #mastodon in the #fediverse
I think it was the last chance to direct the twitter migration energy into discovering new/different fedi platforms.
And it was blown, with alt-social in a weird steady/waiting state that's smaller I suspect, than what many hoped for.

So the basic story would be that mastodon's dominance is pretty entrenched and the "migration" event is mostly "over" (whatever other "events" are on their way) But I wonder about the details of the firefish moment I think it revealed that there arā¦Hachyderm.io
When I go to see old conversations I've had on Mastodon, I usually can't see the replies from other users. Can someone explain why this happens and what I can do to prevent it? I really like being able to refer back to old interactions. Would being on a larger server help?

People are talking about a TV show and it sounds interesting.
You look up the streaming service. Damn, you aren't subscribed to this service. None of the ones you are already subscribed to has the show, but you really want to watch it.
So you subscribe to a new service, provide your email address and your payment information.
Sounds easy. Millions of people do this every day.
But yet, people complain about the #Mastodon onboarding.
Trying out a self-hosted #Akkomane instance using #SpaceHost and think Iāve found the first missing feature coming from #Mastodon: Iām not able to hide posts from accounts I put into lists from my home feed.
I use this quite a bit for creating news lists and those accounts can be pretty chatty so I donāt want it all over my home feed. Mastodon is able to do this, so I assume this is a limitation of Akkoma.
also, still learning how to make threads... apparently I'm all over the place, but it's more or less a "blogging" of my learning process and I share my experiences as I go along.
Feel free to correct me if I've made any logical errors, language errors, etc. I'm only human, tryng to hume the best I can.
For future reference, I might try to make one long thread instead of branching ones. But I feel like some asides deserve their own branch.
Again: I'm learning as I go.

There are so many accounts by the #news media on #Threads, that could but do not yet federate. Doesn't make much sense to ask here for them to do that, so I posted something over there.
