I just found a nice paper that digs way deeper into #AI #Energy #Usage than I did with my rough guess. On the first skimming it seems to come to a result of similar magnitude for training (single digit transatlantic flights, not an SI unit yet.), but with a lot more solid data.

Apple’s AI research suggests features are coming for Siri, artists, and more.
For the last few years, Apple has been looking into ways to use AI to improve Siri, give tools to artists, improve health data, and more. Much of that could come at WWDC 2024.David Pierce (The Verge)
Apparently I have now become so decent at grammar and sentence structure, that I look like ChatGPT.🤣🤣🤣
As a large human model, this is quite a hilarious revelation!
Perplexity #AI's "Discover" feature includes LLM-generated news summaries from many different sources.
Similar summary services will likely become more widespread and more sophisticated.
From a reader's perspective, it has significant benefits -- consistent format, no ads, pulling from many sources (including potentially multilingual ones), etc.
But for news media, if readers don't click through to original sources, it creates further strain on business models (ads, donations, etc.).
In Indonesia, currently #AI is used widly in politcal ways by various president canidates
There are companies that offer all-in-one AI service to such people only
When it comes to powerful things like AI it doesn't matter what rules you set, there will always be countries who will do everything to use it for their own gain no matter how careful the rest of us will be
Personally I think AI companies should be held so much more responsible for their creations

Generic pop music is also dumb. Perfect to be replaced by statistical methods brought to us by #AI.
Probably by 2030 most of Top 100 hits will be at least part written by LLM’s. And people won’t care.
Top 100 music is functional. People use it for affect as a tool. They want a certain mind-state which they can affect on themselves. Simple as that.

Now, that being said, here's some GOOD uses of AI:
1. Correct grammar/spelling/word usage
2. Summarizing long form text
3. Suggestions for a wide variety of things.
4. Searching (Fuck you google)
5. DnD gamerunning, either assisted or as an actual DM (this one I am probably misrepresenting, unfortunately. I am not an actual DnD player. So I guess I am wishing this😬)
It's a sad state of affairs when one of the most AI-positive people on Fedi starts rolling his eyes at these asinine implementations.
I am starting to resent the devs in this space who are obviously misrepresenting the tool and making everyone hate it.
Sincerely,
Fuck you for ruining everyone's perception of something that could be a good tool for humanity.

#AI #Military: "We have to ask ourselves how meaningful political discussions of AI safety are, if they don’t cover military uses of the technology. Despite the lack of evidence that AI-enabled weapons can comply with international law on distinction and proportionality, they are sold around the world. Since some of the technologies are dual use, the lines between civilian and military uses are blurring.
The decision to not regulate military AI has a human price. Even if they are systematically imprecise, these systems are often given undue trust in military contexts as they are wrongly seen as impartial. Yes, AI can help make faster military decisions, but it can also be more error prone and may fundamentally not adhere to international humanitarian law. Human control over operations is critical in legally holding actors to account."

Just told my family I won't be renewing our DuoLingo family subscription because I won't support their replacement of actual human workers with "AI". This explains why their quality has been declining.
I reported a few erroneous answer rejections and DuoLingo emailed that they've accepted one report as correct, but it's not my job to fix their increasingly poor software and I won't support their drive to maximize profits at all costs.

AI-generated books on Amazon now have the potential to kill people, as they've moved into the realm of mushroom foraging. Guides have popped up like, well, mushrooms, packed with information that makes no sense and could easily be dangerous, illustrated with structures that are "the mycological equivalent of a picture of a hot blond with six fingers and too many teeth," writes Vox's Constance Grady. Here's more.

Some said the priest avatar was inappropriate, misleading, or just plain creepy. Some said the priest simulated virtual sacraments — indeed, “Fr. Justin” gladly heard The Pillar’s, “confession,” before giving some spiritual guidance and reciting the words of absolution. And some said that an AI apologetics project leans too heavily into unreliable, controversial, and still-confusing technology.

This lawsuit is a minor headache for #Amazon. Allegedly a woman was fired for doing her job which was keeping Amazon’s #ArtificialIntelligence from using content illegally (probably copyrighted material).
Her boss reportedly did not like that “do-gooder attitude” & demoted her, before firing her during maternity leave. This case could open up lawsuits against Amazon’s #AI in the future.

So lemme get this straight, recent big things for Mastodon:
- Opened up to Facebook who literally helped genocide happen and censors certain posts on their platform, after closed door meetings
- Added AI bro and crypto fucker Amir Ghavi as a board member
- Added a cofounder of Twitter as a board member.
It is becoming reasonable to question if there is a current goal to ensure Mastodon becomes less attractive to its core userbase. Almost like it's being sabotaged on purpose.
