Any experience with SIM7600G-H 4G Dongle?
A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across this little device: waveshare.com/sim7600g-h-4g-do… According to its documentation, it is able to write SMS, provide mobile internet, and allow making phone calls (which is quite rare). Does anyone have any experience with this device? And if yes, does it just work with Linux applications like gnome-calls (I know that this issue gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/calls/-… exists, but it is basically inactive)?
My goal would be to replace my phone entirely. Currently, I only need my phone for Signal as a primary device as well as for basic smartphone stuff, such as SMS, mobile internet, and calls.

for all the #smartwatch kids. Talk is in English.
Personal takeaways:
- photos taken with the device could be hacked, so no photos of any children, possibly expand to no photos of anything identifiable
- distrust that messages definitively come from parents, they could be coming from everyone. In emergencies, call, don't text. Trust in messages like "be 5 m late, wait at the school/pickup spot" but not "there's been an emergency with grandmother, you're being picked up by mummy's friend" and not "take the bus/a taxi home instead of waiting for me"

New Report Explains How Apple Gave Chinese Government Access to iCloud Data and Censors AppsThe Hacker News
Alright, y'all were right, fuck Proton. This was the last straw for me.
For context, in my password manager I had tried formatting some of my entrees so that it would contain the usual username and password, but instead of creating whole new entrees for the security questions for the same account, I just added additional fields in the same entree in order to keep things a little more tidy.
I was not expecting that doing so would result in later being shaken down by Proton to pay even more money just to access the same few bytes of fucking text I had trusted them with. This is sleazy as fuck and I am dropping these idiots entirely.
I'm tired of LLM bullshitting. So I fixed it.

EDRi launches new resource to document abuses and support a full ban on spyware in Europe
cross-posted from : lemmy.zip/post/57521167
Over the past years, repeated investigations have shown that at least 14 EU Member States have deployed spyware against journalists, human rights defenders, lawyers, activists, political opponents, and others.Despite the findings of the European Parliament’s PEGA Inquiry Committee in 2023, and the push from human rights organisations, the European Commission has so far refused to propose binding legislation to prohibit spyware. Not only that: it has done nothing. Right now, no EU-wide red lines exist against the use of spyware. This means that victims lack effective remedies, authorities face no scrutiny, and commercial spyware vendors continue to operate with near-total impunity, enriching themselves by violating human rights, and even benefiting from European public funding.

What a great talk. After six years is even more current and critical today. Everyone, especially our politicians in Europe @EUCommission - should spend 23 minutes watching this video and take action.

PSA: Nova Launcher added Facebook and Google Ads tracking
cross-posted from: lemdro.id/post/35049920
The latest update for the popular Nova Launcher app includes Facebook Ads and Google AdMob.Compare 8.2.4: reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/…
With 8.1.6: reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/…
From 2 trackers to 6 trackers. From 30 permissions to 36. And two of the "trackers" are for ad stuff, like Facebook Ads.
I believe the owner also changed. It's no longer Branch, but something called Instabridge Sweden.

Oh look: #discord outsourced their age verification to some vendor. You know, the #ageverification that countries like the UK want to make mandatory for basically every online service. And the vendor had a data breach exposing photos of government IDs for 70,000 people.

The rise of ID/face scanning to access bars & clubs
TL;DR
ID scanning is becoming a more common requirement to access bars and clubs in Australia (and worldwide). A company called ScanTek is used in over 1,000 clubs in Aus and provides tools such as biometric-matching someone's face to an ID, detecting fake IDs, flagging people and sharing data with other venues automatically
As well as verifying ages, ScanTek boasts "collect marketing information from IDs and drivers licences, which business owners can use to target specific demographics with promotions" on its website in a pitch to business owners. Though they claim to not share any of this with third parties
Australia's privacy laws are vague, don't specify what can be collected and how it must be stored, and only say that companies shouldn't keep data for longer than is "reasonable"
