Part of my frustration with #ActivityPub and one of the things I find baffling giving everything else in it: the lack of tools for backpressure.
Backpressure is fundamental in building reliable distributed systems (c.f., Notes on Distributed Systems for Young Bloods). From a C2S perspective I get why it wouldn't need to be specified, but from a S2S _federated_ protocol perspective its absence is frustrating.
All that it says is to take care not to overwhelm _others_ and a bit on rate limits

Dot Social: The future of the social web

Just saw in a random discord from a few months ago that certain Fediverse softwares don't federate "Trending".....but NO Fediverse software federates "Trending", it's all propagated with posts from users that people on your instance follow. That's how it is for EVERY software that I've used so far.
If an instance doesn't know about an account posting with a specific hashtag, then it can't trend, now can it?🧐Just sayin....
Is there an #activitypub or #mastodon developer hangout place that people think is useful?
(In particular I'm trying right now to figure out if there is a protocol magic I can do to make infosec.exchange stop continuously telling me about the deletion of a particular profile I have never interacted with.)

Look at how @Mike Macgirvin 🖥️ designed events
in @Streams! I would love to see this implemented in other software. @julian have you thought about how @NodeBB would display an #ActivityPub event yet? Does @silverpill's @Mitra have any support? What about @The Real Grunfink's SNAC?
Here's a link to the event itself if anyone wants to query it in their #fediverse software of choice.

Bluesky enthusiasts are stating that Bluesky has ”plans” to make ATProto universal and transfer it to W3C or the like. Well, there is no evidence that Bluesky wants to give up control or the protocol is going to be widely adopted after 5 years of development so forgive me being sceptical. The story is a bit different with ActivityPub.
Woah, this is… big(?). “Jack Dorsey says he quit Bluesky because it was becoming another Twitter”

He left #Twitter, then #BlueSky, and now endorsing #Nostr… but still not the #Fediverse.

The real new Twitter, Jack Dorsey argues, should be something called Nostr.Peter Kafka (Insider)
People still can’t wrap their minds around the fact that the social networks in the Fediverse do not need excessive investor money to thrive.
asks: what about other federation protocols like #AtProto?
A: #ActivityPub is a W3C standard, that's important. It's also been battle-tested over the years.
@pcottle muses it would be interesting to "port over" some AtProto features to ActivityPub, like account portability.
It's hard to imagine #StackOverflow made their decision without considering the fate #Twitter and #Reddit suffered. That they willingly chose to burn the remaining goodwill they had with their users is bewildering.
Right now, people are having active conversations here on #Mastodon about an #ActivityPub / #Fediverse replacement for SO.
"In 2024, for the first time, it finally feels like we have a critical mass of people and platforms who are interested in rewilding the internet to bring back what we lost, and create something new. ... There's a palpable feeling that this just might be the year of the open web."
is this feeling... hope? https://activitypub.ghost.org/day-0/

Dear Fedi, a poll, part 2.
Nevertheless, if you didn't know about it, you know now. Knowing what you know now, do you feel you were a BIT heavy handed regarding BridgyFed and the absolute ridiculous harassment of it's developer? And do you realize now, that there's MUCH worse things here than a bridge to BlueSky and your knowledge of ActivityPub and how it works were previously incorrect?
PS. If you don't feel that this poll applies to you. Don't answer it. I didn't expect complete parity between the polls. Just answer whichever poll you think fits your experience.
#Fedi #Fediverse #Momostr #Bridge #BridgyFed #ActivityPub #Mastodon #BlueSky #Poll #Polls
- Yes to both. (23%, 4 votes)
- Yes to heavy handed on BridgyFed but no on the 2nd (17%, 3 votes)
- No to both. (58%, 10 votes)
- No to heavy handed on BridgyFed, but Yes on 2nd (0%, 0 votes)
I must wonder… if Dorsey truly wants to build something open, non-commercial and decentralized, why doesn’t he even look at the ActivityPub? Why not help it thrive? What’s all that fuss about Bluesky and Nostr?
Former CEO of Twitter wanted to build a social protocol no-one can control, like SMTP or HTTP for social media. Bluesky’s ATProto was supposed to be an open source protocol that Twitter could eventually utilize, but then Musk happened and Bluesky started taking it to the wrong direction and everything fell apart in Dorsey’s mind.
A very revealing interview. I now see even more future in W3C’s ActivityPub.

I've been exploring the fediverse intermittently since last year. As a reflection of my journey so far, I wanted to put down some thoughts:

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.52 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:
Posts that were liked or boosted can now be unliked and unboosted.
Outgoing message timeouts are no longer hardcoded and can be configured (see snac(8)
for more information).
Fixed a bug that caused some incorrect unfollows under special conditions (with shared inboxes enabled and users from the same instance that follow each other, the internal message distributor was confused).
Mastodon API: Added support for lists.
Added a header to avoid over-zealous caching in some browsers (contributed by louis77).
Added support for running and federating inside hidden networks like Tor, I2P or Loki (contributed by iwojima).
Fixed an error processing polls coming from Pleroma instances.
If you find #snac useful, please consider buying grunfink a coffee: https://ko-fi.com/grunfink
Usage tips: Use social media as little as possible. Go for a walk. Meet with friends. Read a good book.
For video sharing content on activitypub, you can register a new account and sign in to peertube instances
It's different over on atproto. You don't need an extra account on Bluemotion video sharing app. Just sign in using your existing Bluesky account

Ryan made a pretty good point around the 16 minute mark about how Threads wasn't told to make their federation "opt-in" from the Fediverse side and that people feel differently about bridges for some reason.
Even though, they're the same thing, in most ways. 2/?
