It was a beautiful stroll through the park, watching the wildlife there when this situation came to be. Unplanned, just by pure luck.

Strix nebulosa (Great Gray Owl). (Best Latin name in the business, don't you think?)

Grays are so cool! They can focus sound with their large "ruff" (facial disk) to hear prey under as much as 60cm (2ft) of snow. Grays will hover over deep snow while listening & then snow plunge to catch their prey! Grays are certainly Superb Owls!

Archeology Southwest article: More than a Pet: Exploring Canine Cultural Histories in North America, "Throw a stick for a dog, & chances are the dog will excitedly wag its tail, charge off at a gallop, & return with the stick in its mouth. Throw a stick for a wolf, & it will look at you quizzically before trotting off to do wolf things. How the latter ever became the former is a subject of much contemplation."

Ochotona princeps (American pika).

Pika are so cool. And they like it cool. Sadly, climate change is causing them to climb ever higher up their mountains, & in some areas, the mountains are no longer high enough. Pika don't hibernate. They live in their little caves under talus & scree, munch on the haystacks they built over the summer, beneath tons of snow. And they make the cutest call, "Eeeep!"

Ein Eisvogel (Alcedo atthis) bricht aus der Wasseroberfläche eines Flusses nach oben aus. Die Flügel sind weit ausgebreitet, Wassertropfen und Spritzer umgeben den Vogel. Im Schnabel hält er einen kleinen Fisch. Das Gefieder zeigt kräftiges Blau am Rücken und Orange an der Unterseite, der Hintergrund ist unscharf und grünlich-dunkel.

A male Centrocercus urophasianus (greater sage-grouse) at dawn trying to attract a female at a mating lek. They are known for filling giant air sacks in their chests and letting out a low thumping noise. They also strut around while doing the thumping call / display. It's kind of cute, in a strange way. They are extremely sensitive birds and you can't get very close without spooking them. This photo is cropped way in.
