A couple of days ago I went and bought my very first digital camera, a used Fujifilm X-E4. I've been thinking about buying a camera for a long time, but I was never too serious about it. It was always more like "it would be nice to have a good camera and actually learn photography".

I must say it has been a lot more fun taking pictures with an actual camera than with my phone, even if the results are not that good yet. I have a lot to learn...

Yesterday, we went out on San Francisco Bay to scatter our friend Bill's ashes. It was moving afternoon, simple and sweet, as we marked the end of a life well lived.

We are standing on the shore of a large lake. Below us are tufts of water grasses growing just offshore, a partially submerged rock and a partially submerged tree limb. To our left is a large leafy shrub. It is a calm evening, the lake surface is just slightly rippled. Across the lake is a low wooded ridge topped by a water tower. Beyond that a glimpse of a slightly higher ridge. Most of the sky is a deep blue. The recently set sun tints the horizon gold. Upper level winds have created a gentle swirl effect in some passing clouds. From below the horizon the sun's rays are tinting the bottoms of the clouds bright pink and deep purple.

Sunrise on the Yarra
That extra complexity of shooting very very wide is both a curse and a blessing. Once you start seeing these extra elements as opportunity instead of hurdles, the compositions start to makes sense. And for me, the idea of my subjects being very very small in a big scene is an extra bonus. I love the play on scale. I like to step into that world of tiny humans, and explore their world as they are confronted by the scale of our cities and buildings. Are we building cities for people, or for profits?
One of these shots is taken at 12mm, the other at 50mm. We change how we see the world when we change lenses. This is what I enjoy most about reviewing camera gear. Just having a reason to flip around my brain and look at my home town from a totally new perspective. I walk this bridge a dozen times a week, on my way to a client or to coffee. But this week I get to stop and explore the scene, and make some photos. And try to make each shoot different to the last time I stopped and took photos on this bridge.
