I really don't understand this sudden groundswell of support for #BlueSky.
It's just "X-Lite": a closed system run by a rich guy who sets his own rules.
I'm going to have to apologize a bit for the BlueSky slander I've been spreading. I did not realize it's actually open source and federated too. It just has its own protocol instead of ActivityPub.
I'm sticking with Mastodon, but I'm a little less upset now about BlueSky's recent prominence
"“We’re building an open-source social network that anyone can take into their own hands and build on, and it’s something that is radically different from anything that’s been done in social media before. Nobody’s been this open, this transparent and put this much control in the users hands.”"
Well, once again, no. ActivityPub and the Fediverse really did this in terms of the users with no companies dictating the terms. What Bluesky is doing is not "radically different" or "put this much control in the users hands". We still can't 100% host our own instances on Bluesky and 90% of the user base is on Bluesky's servers. It did not start with users, it started with the company. Huge difference.
Let's dissect this...
"“The billionaire proof is in the way everything is designed, and so if someone bought or if the Bluesky company went down, everything is open source,” Graber said."
Well, no. Open source tools can still be bring down and we've seen examples of that, where even "open source companies" have been bought and shut down.

" (...) no one is coming to save us from this polluted information environment – not the government or the companies. If we want a good quality information environment, we are going to have to build a new one beyond the walls of the existing Big Tech social media platforms.
We can do that by funding people who do the hard work of collecting facts (aka journalism) and by finding new ways to reach audiences. Luckily, there is a new movement brewing that aims to break open the gates of the closed social media platforms – the so-called “fediverse,” also known as the social web."

"Decentralised social media is more than just a technical shift; it's a step toward restoring autonomy and trust in our digital lives, empowering individuals and communities to connect without compromising their values or privacy."
A study by the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford finds that decentralised social media leads to citizen empowerment.

Mounting calls to protect kids from ‘harmful’ information online, and laws that try to do that, are being challenged in the United States.
There are privacy concerns and constitutional challenges with each idea and way of protecting minors. And soon, the Supreme Court will review a Texas law requiring porn sites to block underage users.

I just discovered the #degrowth hashtag through the previously shared post, and it resonates deeply with my views on social media and the reflections I shared a few days ago:
social.vivaldi.net/@everton137…
It also aligns with my ongoing discomfort about the relentless focus on profit-driven thinking. This mindset ultimately led me to found @okbr, the Brazilian chapter of the nonprofit organization @okfn, which started 13 years ago.
That decision was shaped by my earlier experiences working for a company that exploited its employees with unpaid overtime, including countless holidays and weekends.
The shortcomings of traditional centralized social media platforms run by big tech companies have raised awareness among a growing number of people - but it’s still far from reaching the critical mass needed for real change.

☝️THIS 🧵☝️ is exactly why I do not trust #BlueSky . This recent push of so many accounts joining at once and the INorganic feel of the movement, combined with the #MAGA money funding the platform and the #Crypto scammer who owns it...
It all just adds up to trouble down the road-- for all of us, on or off of BS
BlueSky's MAGA owners are making it seem like a "safe space" for Liberals now, but I am dead certain the plan is to use it to spread political disunity and disinformation down the road.
I am especially worried abt disunity beginning there & working its way across #SocialMedia . Republicans and MAGA only win when we do not unify and vote together. It's how they won in 2016, how they won this year, & how they plan to win in the future.
Trump did not make huge gains between 2020 & 2024. The problem was a lack of unity behind Harris.
If they can sow enough discontent on the Liberal side, then MAGA can walk in the door unchallenged.

A critical look at Bluesky: Despite claims of decentralization, the core infrastructure remains tightly controlled by Bluesky Social, PBC, a VC-funded, for-profit company. With a proprietary protocol (ATProto) developed solely in-house, the incentives lean toward control rather than true federation. For now, it's still better than ExTwitter, but don't mistake it for Mastodon's openness.

I feel the fact that #Bluesky is connected to Steve Bannon and Russian state media and cryptobros should be bigger news.
But it's not.
If you search "Bluesky" using a search engine like DuckDuckGo, you'll come across results like "Here's What To Know About Bluesky" (NBC) or "X users jump to Bluesky - but what is it and who owns it" (BBC). One would think the aforementioned connections would be relevant info in a piece like that.
The omission is glaring.

This afternoon, an acquaintance joined a Mastodon instance and asked me which "celebrities" are present in the Fediverse, as if it were important to determine the value of a social network based on that.
I told him that the most important user in the Fediverse is him. Just as it’s you, reading this. Someone who has decided to interact with others freely. Who has chosen to trust their administrator (or create their own instance) more than they trust those who run traditional, monolithic, centralized social networks.
So, I want to thank all the friends of BSD Cafe, whether local or not, for being here and making this place what it is. And I thank all my friends in the Fediverse, who make my timeline lively, interesting, intelligent, fun, and thought-provoking - every day, at any time.

Notes on starter packs: what I like about Mastodon (and previously on Twitter to some extent). I like the community building as an active process. That is, discovering people by reading hashtags and interacting with them (or hoping to learn from them). This is an active process, which runs counter to the parasocial influencer stuff you get elsewhere. In this context, people are free to follow, but not free to expect interactions with me if they are not constructive.

As of now, #Bluesky doesn't support attempts to bridge edits of ActivityPub content.
That's all I need to know, to make me avoid Bluesky bridging.
I like to repeatedly edit for clarity and style, for writing practice. In fact, I recall #editing one of my posts ten times.

Something a little different for this week’s article - a guide to the Twitter/X exodus from a disability and chronic illness point of view.
People are leaving the site in droves - whether because of changing privacy and data policies or in protest of Musk and Trump’s increasingly fascist and problematic behaviour.
What happens to the disability community who’ve long relied on that app for support, friendship and connection? People who are sick can’t migrate to a new platform as easily as their non-disabled counterparts.
How can we help people find community elsewhere? How can we ensure the transition takes as few spoons as possible?
Most importantly - how can we ensure no one gets left behind?
