"[T]he US government is...trying to break up #Google, the largest #tech #company in the history of the world, and there has been virtually no press about it.
" #Biden's comms team isn't bragging about the administration's accomplishments, because the senior partners in this coalition oppose those accomplishments. They don't want to win an #election based on the promise to prosecute an anti-corporate revolution, because they are counter-revolutionaries."
New blog post: Takeaways from the Google Cloud Warehouse API documentation leak.
A leak of all of Google’s 14,000 ranking recently hit the news. I go over some of the ones that people are eyeing more closely, and end with a cold shower to cool down some of the misleading hype from the SEO industry.
Excerpt:
We only have API documentation. We don’t know about any hidden knowledge, whether any of these factors have a ranking weight of “zero”, whether any of these conditionally apply, which are only used internally for testing, etc. As I said in prior disclaimers, some factors might exist for testing purposes. Serious conclusions drawn from this leak are, to some degree, speculation.

My thoughts on Google's Cloud Warehouse API doc leak, what we can learn from its ranking factors, and why the following SEO hype is overblown.Seirdy’s Home
Massive leak at #Google confirms what we have all known for years, just how much is tracked, stored, and monetized.
Even clearer now how Chrome tracks and reports EVERYTHING you do. For heavens' sake delete it now and move to Firefox
Also they've outright lied for years about their data collection and search practices.
Looks like 'Don't be evil' wasn't enough. ;)

#Google is having a moment with its search engine algorithm leaks, right as it's involved in what might be the world's *biggest* #antitrust case:

Hopefully this does something about its being heavily underreported. Google's kept The Algorithm™ under wraps for YEARS, because "otherwise the spammers would win" (h/t @pluralistic ):

Google confirms the leaked Search documents are real
Until yesterday, Google had refused to comment on the authenticity of the trove of documents, some of which may indicate what the company uses to rank sites in search.Mia Sato (The Verge)

It's crazy how different I feel about #Google versus 13 years ago. They were the innovative #opensource-embracing counter to the corporate behemoth of #Microsoft. It's sad how much Google has embodied many of the very things it boldly rallied against. And now Microsoft can pitch its own web services as simply being not-Google.
(I could be wrong, but I remember "Bing" being an informal, recursive acronym for Bing Is Not Google.)

KI generiert kein Wissen, sondern setzt gemäss voreingestellten Parametern und Algorithmen Wörter in eine in erster Linie grammatikalisch richtige Abfolge - in neuer Zusammensetzung.
Was darüber hinausgeht, bleibt am verfügbaren Datensatz an Informationen hängen. Sind die Informationen (aka der Datensatz) Müll, dann gibt KI grammatikalisch korrekten Müll in anderer Zusammensetzung wieder.

#Google recently added a new revolutionary feature to *checks notes* "search the Web". But it's rather hidden. So Ernie Smith from Tedium developed
a simple webpage that adds an extra url parameter to your search to return a de-enshittified list of results –– or at least as de-enshittified as Google results can be nowadays.

When you use the share button on YouTube, Google will tack on a URL argument “si=…”. I used to delete these before sharing so that Google can’t track and aggregate clicks.
But now I have resorted to more aggressive messaging to Google and encourage others to do so also. Change the “si=“ string to something like “si=stoptrackingusgoogle”.

#Google Is Paying #Reddit $60 Million for #Fucksmith to Tell Its Users to Eat #Glue
The complete destruction of Google Search via forced #AI adoption and the carnage it is wreaking on the internet is deeply depressing, but there are bright spots. For example, as the prophecy foretold, we are learning exactly what Google is paying Reddit $60 million annually for. And that is to confidently serve its customers ideas like, to make cheese stick on a pizza, “you can also add about 1/8 cup of non-toxic glue” to #pizza sauce, which comes directly from the mind of a Reddit user who calls themselves “Fucksmith” and posted about putting glue on pizza 11 years ago.

This is the SearxNG instance I currently use:
Low latency, has the options I need, and I appreciate the defaults of leaving the query in the URL and in the page title.
SearXNG is a meta-search engine. You can use it as a front-end to one or multiple search engines such as DuckDuckGo, Google, Bing, Qwant, ..., it only depends on what your instance makes available.

In the latest episode of his podcast #SearchEngine @pjvogt talks about how #Google might soon destroy many #news websites:
https://megaphone.link/CAD6984549408
Guest @caseynewton makes the case, that the #Fediverse might save the "good internet".
But both are just scratching the surface and PJ later asks the listeners, if he should make an episode about the Fediverse. I would really like to hear that. But with whom as guest/expert? @mike?@tchambers? @reckless1280?
Ideas?
Since #DuckDuckGo and #Ecosia aren't working as #Bing is down, instead of going to #Google, perhaps check out https://searchengine.party/ instead and find an alternate #search engine.
To set a search engine as your default, visit the site and right click the URL bar, and select add. Then change your default in settings.
(Firefox will add it as an option in the default engines in settings. Chrome will open settings with it as an "inactive shortcut" which you can "make default" in the entry's menu.)
