Splash
Many intelligent creatures play, when hunger is satisfied they look for pastimes.
These beautiful animals were racing each other through the water, their sleek bodies leaping and, instead of the simple "surface and breath" behaviour, they were making splashes.
Surely, they were doing it for fun?

Something different as I work through the process of settling my friend Bill's affairs. His bank and old employer need a death certificate (easy). We've picked a date for a cocktail celebration of Bill's life (emotionally harder). And now it's time to find an estate sales firm to handle a house full of furniture and possessions. I have no idea how the latter works but I know I'm not the first person to go down this path.
Backstory: Bill was 95. And as a gay man of a certain age, he had eclectic and oftentimes exquisite tastes. His house was filled with antiques, shiny objects, chinoiserie, and touristy kitsch from Hawaii. And he had a chair that, sometime in the 1950s, on a drunken night, somehow left the lobby of the Palace Hotel and ended up in Bill's living room.
Anyway, this is a snapshot I took a decade ago, in said living room, taken through the very dirty viewfinder of a Kodak Duaflex TLR, using a Pentax DSLR pointed downward. In a nutshell, this is Bill.
The snow stopped this afternoon, and the clouds disappeared. Nordlys popped in for a bit, so I popped out to take some photos.
They haven't stopped dancing all night, but I have to get some sleep. Big day tomorrow. Big two weeks ahead.
Good night all.

A male Centrocercus urophasianus (greater sage-grouse) at dawn trying to attract a female at a mating lek. They are known for filling giant air sacks in their chests and letting out a low thumping noise. They also strut around while doing the thumping call / display. It's kind of cute, in a strange way. They are extremely sensitive birds and you can't get very close without spooking them. This photo is cropped way in.

40 years ago, while shopping for oriental rugs for an old cottage in the Castro, I fell in love with a children's pull toy: a hand carved wooden Trojan horse from Turkey (of course). Four decades later, it is still one of my favorite, non-vibrating toys.
So here it is, where I see it every morning, on a shelf just below a window in my bedroom. I took this photo yesterday, just as the morning light started to filter through the window shade. It's something calm and gentle to start off the week.
Frost on the inside of my bedroom window. Taken this past weekend at 9°F with a wind chill feel of -6°F (-12/-21°C).

When I took this shot I was struggling with a bunch of med changes that were really wrecking me with their side effects.

Sometimes the quiet moments get loud. Feels like the planet is angry at us humans. Indeed, the entire solar system is paying attention.
