The #Trump “Justice” Department has often cast aside normal procedures intended to seek #accountability in favor of pushing #prosecutors & the #FBI to focus on critics of the #immigration crackdown.
The chief federal judge in #Minnesota says the #Trump admin has failed to comply with orders to hold hearings for detained immigrants & ordered the head of #ICE to appear Friday to explain why he shouldn’t be held in #contempt.
In an order Monday, Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz said #ToddLyons, the acting director of ICE, must appear personally in court. Schlitz took the admin to task over its handling of bond hearings for immigrants it has detained.
A leaked ICE document says the agency only needs an administrative warrant (not a judge’s approval) to enter a home and make an arrest.
We spoke with a former federal judge who says that’s a blatant violation of 4th Amendment rights, and amounts to ICE writing something up and saying, ‘We want you arrested because we said so’.
Since the republic’s beginning, it has been uncontested law that to invade someone’s home, the government needs a warrant reviewed and signed by a judicial officer. ICE is turning that law on its head.
“It’s right now a little bit in progress,” #Trump told reporters. “But pretty far along. It gets us everything we needed to get.” Trump, however, would not say if the deal involved the #UnitedStates obtaining ownership of #Greenland.
A CNN reporter asked #Trump if the deal he was pursuing with European leaders still involved the #US owning #Greenland. Trump hesitated, looking up as he thought of what to say, before answering: “It’s a long-term deal. It’s the ultimate long-term deal.” Asked how long that was, he replied: “Infinite. There is no time limit. It’s a deal that’s forever.”
Trump said the framework of a deal relating to Greenland would be put out “pretty soon.”

An emergency meeting of #EU ambassadors will take place in Brussels on Sunday in response to Trump’s threat, which he made after an estimated quarter of the population of Greenland’s capital Nuuk joined #protests against any potential #annexation.
#Trump for months has insisted that the US should control #Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of #NATO ally #Denmark, and said earlier this week that anything less than the Arctic island being in U.S. hands would be “unacceptable.”
“I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland,” he said Friday, without providing details. “We need Greenland for national security.”
Trump suggested Friday that he may punish countries with tariffs if they don’t back the US controlling Greenland, a message that came as a Congressional delegation met Danish & Greenlandic lawmakers in Copenhagen & sought to lower tensions.
