Tesla charging chief Rebecca Tinucci cut 15-20% of her team after Musk demanded it.

She felt that would justify a major Supercharger network expansion, but when she met with Musk he wanted more layoffs. When she pushed back, he fired the whole team.

Remember all the times Elon Musk said Tesla is so amazing for the environment? The company is being sued for violating the Clean Air Act hundreds of times in recent years by emitting harmful pollutants from its Fremont factory into nearby neighborhoods.

Some really interesting AI tools are coming, but will Gemini search continue hurting website traffic?

#tech #technology #business #news #technews #bbtg #geek #google #googleio #search #AI

Watching #GoogleIO and there are some cool demonstrations of data center cloud computing, but there's also this fog of dystopia surrounding these demos.
The announcements for search are horrifying. Google is full mask off.

Phrases like "search for something, and we'll collect all this data for you" basically equates to:

"We sucked up ALL the data from people who really did the work, and we're going to give you the results of their hard work, but we wont take you to the site that generated the data. You can stay on the search page, and the site's traffic will plummet."

This is shocking.

Tech “leaders” casually justifying the murder of thousands of Palestinian children.

When someone doesn't recognize a child as a “child” you know they are racists and supremacists.

It's time to block, boycott, divest from anyone and any company that thinks dehumanization is okay.

I was discussing the latest blunder from Neuralink with my friends. They were under the impression this is all still "really cool tech".

There is no reason for any amount of optimism when:

A) There have been 0 peer-reviewed publications resulting from their research;

B) They are being investigated for a HUGE number of animal deaths (1500) in the name of "progress";

C) There's still the DRM/obsolescence challenge.

Layoffs are hitting workers at some tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Tesla. Here’s why that may backfire, explains Business Insider’s Tim Paradis. "In short, the effects of layoffs can counter the financial benefits of expenses carved out of a P&L."

With more than 25,000 charging ports in the U.S. and over 50,000 worldwide, Tesla’s Supercharger network is the undisputed king of EV fast charging. But with the recent layoffs, CEO Elon Musk “cast a cloud over the private infrastructure project.” Read more from TechCrunch: https://flip.it/KJAelX

Amazon Prime Video subscribers are about to see even more ads. In January, viewers who didn't pay an additional $3 a month started to see commercials. To follow through on my pledge to do more of my #internet reading on the #indieweb, I've been visiting random blogs using this site and adding any interesting ones to an #RSS feed.

My intention is to browse this feed much the same way I would the news -call it a self-care practice. I want to spend more time in reflection and less in panic. I also want to get ideas for, perhaps, my own blog someday.

I know I will not change anything by myself, but ... he is freaking dangerous.

I just wonder why in the world a publication that publishes this still has a link to Twitter, but not to their Threads account, or an account on Mastodon. Thoughts? @motherjonesmag

Swedish Tesla technicians “described increasing pressure to fix more cars in less time, which they said forced them to take shortcuts, skip breaks and stay late. They’d seen colleagues get fired for reasons that they said seemed arbitrary. Two said they’d spoken up about these issues and were deprived of raises as a result.”

This is truly one of the more baffling decisions I’ve seen in a long time. Tesla is a leader in charging infrastructure, to the degree that virtually every other carmaker is even adopting its standard.

Then Elon Musk laid off the entire Supercharger team.

Elon Musk is betting Tesla’s future on using self-driving fantasies to boost the share price instead of building a real car business. He just gutted the teams working on the Supercharger network (right as other companies are adopting it!) and new vehicles.

also, still learning how to make threads... apparently I'm all over the place, but it's more or less a "blogging" of my learning process and I share my experiences as I go along.

Feel free to correct me if I've made any logical errors, language errors, etc. I'm only human, tryng to hume the best I can.

For future reference, I might try to make one long thread instead of branching ones. But I feel like some asides deserve their own branch.

Again: I'm learning as I go.

Around this month in 1974, the microcomputer industry took off. Can you imagine that 50 years has passed? It all started with the Popular Electronics cover photo and accompanying article of the Altair 8800 in January 1975. That led to the homebrew computer club and the computers with the early Intel 8080 microprocessors and S100 bus. The club led to the first orders of the Altair 8800 , followed by the Imsai 8080 competitor, which is recognizable in the movie Wargames. The homebrew club led to the Apple computer, and the rest is history. (The copy of the rare magazine in the photo is my own). Members of the classic computing community seem to agree that April 1974 marks the launch of the Altair with the first commercial release. Hence, before this month is over, I would like to share a toast with all the computer enthusiasts out there that we ought to thank the month of April 1974 for all the computing machinery that we use every day. #tech #computinghistory #retrocomputing
