Found a very dozy pair of Wood Mice on the outskirts of Bath today. Picked one up briefly to check for the rarer Yellow-necked Mouse, which has a complete yellow band across the neck. This one only had a small patch, so definitely a Wood Mouse. I returned it to its bed and its friend after examining it.

Scientists documented whales in a group assisting in the birth

No cetaceans needed, they got video

Sperm whales are among the most social animals on the planet. And until recently, just four births were recorded over a 60-year period. Then in July 2023, scientists who were conducting field work in the Caribbean Sea dropped what they were doing and recorded two sperm whale family groups come together to assist with the birth of a newborn calf. @ScienceAlert has more:

This #NATURE paper presents a pipeline for automating the entire scientific process end to end. The authors present The AI Scientist, which creates research ideas, writes code, runs experiments, plots and analyses data, writes the entire scientific manuscript, and performs its own peer review.

Aerial Stare

This red‑tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) passed nearby but high overhead. I wanted to catch a shot at the maximum focal length of my setup, but there just wasn’t enough time. The challenge with long focal lengths is that the closer they bring the subject, the narrower the field of view becomes—so actually finding and locking onto a flying bird gets a lot harder.

So this image was taken at the minimum focal length of my rig, 280mm. It’s not quite as crisp as I like, but honestly, it’s hard to complain when a hawk is staring straight back at you.

Today, for many reasons, was a good day. Best of all was that I saw a blue-tailed skink in the wild and managed to photograph it before it ran off.

"Hard surfaces such as driveways and car parks block water from filtering into the soil.

"By removing the pavement, soils can soak up rainwater, which in turn aids in recharging groundwater supplies."

I keep seeing versions of this post, which imply a bizarre misunderstanding of how we know the world.

Do people imagine that if we'd never observed galaxies or neutrinos or exoplanets or the cosmic microwave background, we could have *imagined* these things & that would be just as real?

Or that we've magically reached the point, just now, where we no longer need to observe the world?

Wedge-tailed shearwater in a nesting burrow at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge today on Kauai. They coo like little babies, which can be a little trippy (especially at night).

Wild roe deer in my local forest. The female was right next to me and only sensed me, but didn't run away. It looked like the males were fighting, but not seriously.

I stopped to check a photo, when I noticed that a silhouette to the left of me looked just like a fallow deer. Lo and behold.

My strawberry plants are blooming & starting to produce fruit again and this #squirrel was on the job, crawling all over the GreenStalk planter and carefully inspecting their progress.

Schon besser
