My survey asked what your favorite search engine is.
51% said DuckDuckGo, 12% Startpage, 9% Ecosia and 4% Qwant. Only 6% said Google and 1% Bing. 17% said they preferred another search engine, with many mentioning Kagi and Mojeek.
This is quite different from what the market share out there is, which shows how unique you all are here in the Fediverse. You make your own choices and do not follow everyone else. Be proud.

I’m not sure how consensus work in the starter pack, but as it seems, it uses opt-out principle at the moment.
Re: 1. EU institutions had many more accounts half a year ago (until Apr. 2024), but they ‘successfully ended the experiment‘, only a handful of them remained. Nobody wanted to take over the management of the ‘experimental’ servers and the domain (social.network.europa.eu/@XXXX). All 20-30 or so accounts of EU institutions vanished.
Nevertheless, European Commission set-up a new server (xxx.social-network.europa.eu) and it continues its presence on fediverse.
Re: 2. EU projects is a pack of EU funded projects. Currently it includes a few Erasmus+ KA2 projects that I know firsthand.

Wrap-up
‘Fediverse starter pack’ is a very fresh service and I hope it will remain functional and mature over time. I hope it will be integrated in various signup pages like ‘joinmastodon’, to make fediverse experience for new users more frictionless.

Damn, @mammoth is shutting down the app and their moth.social server. Super bummed to see this. Mammoth was one of the first big Mastodon projects I saw when I joined for real back in 2021.
I was even on the original TestFlight with the old icon! It kind of indirectly sparked my first attempt at @mastowatch

Which #mastodon instance would you recommend to host the institutional account for an interdisciplinary academic department in the UK?
scholar.social would be great, but it's not admitting more users. Other alternatives I've considered: sciences.social/ (although not all of us are social scientists), h-net.social (not all of us from humanities) or datasci.social (not all of us are data scientists)

Most days, I scroll through Mastodon, and it's lighthearted and pet pictures. Today, for whatever reason, the tone just feels heavy and a bit down. I hope everyone is OK? I had #Elasticsearch running on a spare VPS for testing full-text search on #Mastodon. The functionality is pretty awesome and useful.
I have consolidated and moved Elasticsearch onto the VPS running shumai.xyz -- there's 16GB of RAM on this VPS, so I have memory to spare. I am not too worried about any performance hit since this is just a single-user instance.
If mstdn.social falls off the #fediverse all of the sudden, we'll know what happened: #hetzner. Here's hoping Hetzner is not going to react in a knee-jerk fashion.

Did you know you can get more low quality content, more unoriginal content, more sensitive content and more misinformation? If you feel you are not getting enough of it?
The problem with algorithmic content is that it tends to promote stuff like this. I would like no low-quality content, no unoriginal content and clearly no misinformation.
If I was getting only what my friends write, I would get very little of this stuff. Would that not be nice.
This is why I spend a lot more of my time on Vivaldi Social and Mastodon...

wow. #mastodon’s ceo banned me. rightfully so, i wasn’t polite. but at least i know he read my post about #bluesky. maybe if enough people point out that the current #fediverse leadership sucks, they’ll start learning something from the industry.
but honestly, i’m a little surprised he’s such a thin-skinned person. who would’ve thought? 🤷
#bluesky is winning (and will win) not because it has a better protocol (it doesn’t) but because it has a competent ceo who talks non stop about bluesky w/ its users ON THE FUCKING PLATFORM.
With our most recent update, creating and editing lists has never been easier in the #Mastodon web app. Lists allow you to declutter your home feed by organizing accounts into arbitrary alternative feeds. And there is some other stuff we may be working on to make this feature even more powerful...
