View From The Top

Near Bolungarvík in the Westfjords of #Iceland is a 638m/2093ft high mountain named Bolafjall.

A road was built to the top in 1986 for a radar station and in 2002 it was opened to the public. In 2022 an observation deck was added.

The view across Ísafjarðardjúp and Denmark Strait is astonishing. A fishing boat is lending scale. Hornstrandir Nature Reserve was clearly visible on that day.

A very tight hairpin bend is visible ahead, this has a short barrier on the outer edge. The valley beyond is U-shaped and glacial, clothed in autumnal colours. Waterfalls and a meandering river can be seen.

We rarely receive long duration soaking rains in the Reno-Sparks area. While I was gone this fall, I'm told it rained for nearly two days. I wish I had been here so I could play around with making more photos like this one.

There was a phase when I kept placing my wife in front of beautiful scenes - not to make a lovely portrait for the family album, but simply to give the landscape some scale. This photo is from that era. I’d copied the idea from photographers who put a tiny person in a grand, dramatic backdrop. Fantastic images, of course… and yet, gloriously cliché. Whenever I see one, I roll my eyes - and admire it anyway.

A monochrome triple-exposure photograph of a brick sidewalk and city street on a late fall day. Taken downtown in San Francisco, on Market Street near Powell, there are dark, mid-rise buildings on either side of the photo. The sun is low on the horizon, shining directly into the camera... creating glare while casting very long shadows as the ghosts of people walk towards the camera. The result is jittery, moody, and very urban.

Last night’s full moon, the last supermoon of the year, was what the Mohawk Nation calls the Cold Moon — also known by other names such as the Snow Moon (Cherokee), the Frost Exploding Trees Moon (Cree), the Moon When the Deer Shed Their Antlers (Lakota), the Long Night Moon (Mohican), and the Moon When the Wolves Run Together (Cheyenne). Beautiful by any name.

Dingle’s Gentle Sentinel

Many years ago while travelling on the Dingle Peninsula we came across a donkey in a field in Muiríoch. I posted a photo of him in 2007 and again in 2008 but I happened to come across this photo of him and did a little work on the photo.

There’s a chance this donkey is still alive. Hopefully he’s well cared for and enjoying his elder years.
