I love this little hawthorn below Ingra Tor, its roots are covered in lichen and it always looks like a witch petrified in a tree …taken on Wednesday, #Dartmoor, #Devon #photography #witchtree

"Halfway up The Nose of El Capitan is one of the wildest pendulums in existence"--it's called the King Swing! I shot this way back in 2015 with my Sony a6000 (a CMOS sensor camera) and a 70-200mm lens for a 35mm equivalent of 300mm. Still, it's cropped waaay in. The climber's goal is seen in the fourth frame, grabbing onto a crack in the rock face so they may continue their climb up The Nose and to the top.

Storm Front

Tornadoes in Iceland are very rare, but this strong curve of cloud connected with a distant column that seemed to be spinning.

The coffee colour of the water was due to glacial flour, and the deep ripples in the lake show how windy it was.

November: Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant in Fljótsdalshérað. Looking across Hálslón reservoir towards Sandfell island - which was a 678 metre mountain - and Vatnajökull glacier, south-eastern Iceland.

Apocalypse picnic

Lacanau, France
People sit on the beach of Moutchic as smoke rises into the sky from a wildfire. Authorities in south-western France have ordered the total evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula on the Atlantic coast by land and sea as an ‘intense and highly unpredictable’ wildfire advances on one of the country’s best-known holiday spots.

Wow, look what I found! But it's certainly not as big as I thought it would be. And I didn't think I'd find it in Brookings, Oregon, either. 🤔

Beaut beetle which I noticed flying and which then landed in the grass at my feet. Managed to get some reasonable shots as it moved quite slowly and let me get quite close before flying off. Seen at Glen Erin near Bowen, Qld. Canon R10 and RF100-400 lens. Hand held, natural light. ID-ed on iNaturalist as Rhipicera mystacina.

Columnar Jointing

Basalt is a peculiar type of rock. When it cools, it contracts and forms cracks to release the tensile energy.
This frequently produces quite regular hexagonal columns. These pillars have enormous vertical strength but tend to erode away in horizontal slices from the top down, forming steps.

This lovely little waterfall is hitting lots of them, all the way down.

Late November, Ófærugil in Breiðdalsvík, eastern Iceland.

It took multiple days of rain for this waterfall to even flow this much and it was still raining and foggy when I visited.

Nitrogen Fringe

Green is the most common colour seen during auroral displays. It's produced when charged solar particles collide with oxygen molecules at altitudes of 100 to 300 km.

Sometimes the lower edge of an aurora will have a pink tinge, which is produced by ionised nitrogen at altitudes below 100 km.

On this November night, we saw it during an intense KP7 geomagnetic storm. Berufjörður in eastern Iceland.

🚃An old abandoned funicular railway, somewhere in northern Italy. This tramway ran until the late 1970s, ferrying tourists between the picturesque lakeshore and the hotels and restaurants at the top of the mountain.
