🧬 A marine alga just rewrote biology's textbook rule

For decades, students learned only bacteria can fix nitrogen from the air. In 2024, scientists found a tiny ocean alga has a real organelle - the "nitroplast" - that does it too. Only the 4th organelle born from endosymbiosis in 4 billion years of life.

It's #MountainMonday lets celebrate #Yukon today!

On this multi-day backpacking trip we had maybe 6hrs of sunlight over a full week as the late summer storms hit us every day. This was one of the fleeting moments of brilliant light that pierced through the rain clouds. An absolutely breathtaking moment.

I caught my #Robin friend Henry sunbathing yesterday. There is a particular spot he likes to do this in. Sunbathing helps oil to spread across the feathers and helps to drive out parasites.

🦗 In 1875, a single swarm of Rocky Mountain locusts covered 198,000 square miles - bigger than California - with an estimated 12.5 trillion insects. It was the largest concentration of animals ever recorded.

Within 30 years, the species was completely extinct. Not hunted. Not poisoned. Farmers just plowed over its breeding grounds in Rocky Mountain river valleys without realizing that was the whole species' reproductive core.

The locust ate crops, clothing, wooden tool handles, even wool off living sheep. Then it simply vanished - the only major agricultural pest in history to go extinct on its own.

Same era, same lesson: the passenger pigeon, once billions strong, collapsed to a single bird named Martha who died at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. Both proved that sheer numbers don't guarantee survival when critical habitat is hidden.

RE: mastodon.social/@sundogplanets…

Fellow Californians, get on the phones to Senators Schiff & Padilla & your house rep. Demand they block this horrid ecosystem destroying venture.

Phone numbers for House and Senate offices, both voice and TTY, are available by calling the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 (voice) or 202-224-3091 (TTY)

OAK EGGAR
Lasiocampa quercus

Name comes from its acorn-shaped cocoon. Larvae actually feed on heathers, brambles and hawthorns.

🧬 For 150 years, lichens were biology's textbook example of symbiosis: a fungus plus an alga, working together. Simple, elegant, settled science.

Except it wasn't. In 2016, genetic sequencing revealed a third partner hiding in plain sight - a basidiomycete yeast embedded in the lichen's outer cortex. Scientists had been looking at it through microscopes for over a century and assumed it was part of the host fungus.

This explains a mystery that frustrated mycologists for decades: why they could never grow a lichen in the lab from just the "known" two partners. The cultures always failed to develop the right shape or chemistry. The recipe was missing an ingredient.

The yeast's abundance correlates with variations in lichen body plans, suggesting it helps sculpt the very forms taxonomists had been cataloguing all along.

How many storms did it survive? How many birds found shelter in its branches? How many forests began from its seeds? An old tree is a lifetime of giving. Let's be the generation that protects, not destroys, our natural heritage.

European robin.

I've been enjoying watching a pair of robins go in and out of my garden with food recently. They must have a nest somewhere nearby. Always a pleasure to see them and I'm glad that my tiny garden can provide a haven. I'll have to remember to put water out for them again as the hot weather returns this week.

June 2026. Stockport UK.
